Do your own grocery shopping!

I've realized that if I'm going to be serious about eating healthy I really have to do my own grocery shopping on a regular basis and not rely on whatever my mom brings home. My mom's shopping philosophy is to try to get the most food possible while spending the least amount of money possible-she thinks that's going to keep us on a budget; however, my theory is that budget grocery shopping is counterproductive. It's better to just get what you really like because when you're not crazy about the food options in the house you're more likely to eat out or stop by the drive-thru. I can't stand the cheapest deli meats and cheeses and I prefer to get things fresh over frozen or canned.

So I went down to Target and picked up some basic staple items, about $40 worth of food: whole wheat buns, turkey burger, mushroom veggie burger, almond kashi bars, turkey bacon, healthy choice soup, pink salmon packets, romein lettuce, light string cheese, lean deli turkey, skim mozarella slices, and diet ocean spray. This is all stuff that I KNOW I like and I KNOW I will consume, anything that I was uncertain or that I had to think twice about I didn't purchase. In case you were wondering dinner tonight was a turkey burger with a slice of mozarella cheese melted on the turkey and romein lettuce with a bit of mustard on a wheat bun. It was delicious! Isn't that picture just so pretty?

A couple of days ago I made one of the meals in the recipe packet my nutritionist gave me and took a picture. It's a shrimp cucumber mint salad, very simple to make and I loved it! I personally prefer this type of simple to prepare food over elaborately cooked meals. If you're interested in the recipe and preparation let me know.

Salams Asma, you're totally right about the shopping thing. I've been doing my weight loss thing since the summertime and I find that yes i do go grocery shopping more now, but its for good reason. (1) when you have the food at home, you're less likely to buy on-the go... you prepare in advance which helps to keep your eating in check, (2) you buy more fruits and veggies and other "fresh" foods that you can't buy in bulk or they're spoil, and (3)you have "healthy" snacks available. Ppl laugh at me now bc. i'll be out and pull a random apple, 100 calorie snack or something from my purse. But it works for me. I just grab something b4 i leave home so that I dont have to buy from vending machines or corner stores later on.

kudos on your blogging and your weight loss journey, iA we'll all be successful at this.

Hey - thanks for coming by my blog and adding me to your blogroll - I guess I just learned a new term - "blogroll." Sounds like something good to eat, though, doesn't it? With a creamy chocolate filling and sprinkles? Just kidding - I am now on period and can think of nothing but sweets! Anyway - I will add you to my blogroll as well. The shopping thing is so true - it important to buy the stuff you like!! I carry a lot of bars and protein drinks with me that I can add to water or coffee and that helps me out immensely when I am wanting to eat something and am not home. Well, I will check back with you - keep going!

Thanks also for visiting my blog! I've added a return link to you as well.

I also agree - shopping for yourself is very important! If I left it up to my husband, we'd be eating convenience foods all the time :)

I always have fruit or nuts with me when I go out.
And you are absolutely right. If you buy food you do not really like, or if you eat food you do not really like, you end up not satisfied and hungry for more.

I am always looking for new salad recipes, so please post this one.

congratulations! I am so proud of you. I've been following your blog and its been inspiring.

I never had too much weight to lose, but I was pushing a weight that I was unhappy with (5'2 139 lbs.. just a lil chunkie), and I knew that if I continued my bad eating habits and lack of exercise that I could end up in a position I did not want to be in.

I've started eating much healthier and have been running 3 miles on an elliptical 2 or 3 times a week

and I've lost 7 pounds in three weeks! I feel so good!! i didn't think it would actually work ya know.. i was skeptical.

thank you for your inspiration! you are amazing
